Owtons are chosen for national BBQ contest finale!
Owtons is getting fired up to take on counterparts from across the UK in the national final of their annual barbecue competition.
Winners of the Southern regional heat have now been announced and Owtons of Hampshire will be hoping for further sizzling success at next month’s finale, when national winners in each of six BBQ product categories will emerge.
One of them will have the ultimate honour of being crowned overall supreme champion by the Q Guild, which represents 110 award-winning butchers from the Scottish Highlands down to the south coast.
Owtons claimed the Speciality Barbecue Product category with their Oozing Lamb Fillet, along with five additional gold awards for their Pork Sausage, Sirloin Steak, Beefburger, Duck & Hoisin Sausage and Wild Boar, Cranberry, Spring Onion & Rosemary Burger.
John Harding, general manager of Owton’s, said: “The Oozing Lamb Fillet always goes down very well – the fillet is beaten out, covered with mozzarella, sage and spinach and rolled up like a roulade and cooked on a barbecue. It’s the high end choice for people who don’t just want burgers and sausages.
“We won gold awards for every product we entered so we’re very pleased; it was a good result.”
Almost 300 products from Q Guild butchers nationwide were entered for this year’s competition. The national final takes place at The Windmill Village Hotel, Coventry, on Sunday, May 31.
Q Guild national chairman, Alnwick butcher Mark Turnbull said: “Entries have increased this year, such is the prestige of winning a Q Guild BBQ championship. Hopefully, the weather will warm up as the 2015 BBQ season gets into full swing and one thing’s for sure – Q Guild butchers come well equipped to cater for al fresco aficionados nationwide.”
